William Powell 6-string. In the Bleak Midwinter string. Disco yes, he played the same tune twice in one show. Another great review of a great artist.
Hope to see him at the Birchmere in Alexandria next week. This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Learn how your comment data is processed. Instrumentals and Songs The second offering in the set also came from his debut album. The plunk and trickle of sparse harmonics chime and decay, until the last low note sinks into a well of edgy silence. Just when it seems to have run its course, the second half of the piece swoops down from a higher register with an urgency that makes the pulse race.
Is this a tumbling fall from some towering crest or the frantic escape that follows a sudden discovery? The audience replied with the kind of outburst that might follow an exhilarating carnival ride. Kottke is known for his funny stories almost as much as his evocative instrumentals. Tonight was no exception. As he re-tuned the six pairs of strings he was reminded how players of the Baroque lute have to contend with 24 strings of sheep gut. He described his own attempts to play one.
Photo: D. The last three pieces on the string began with Disco that was also well-received as the audience responded to its repeating rhythms and busy passages crowded with notes.
And then he played two of his bona fide hits. Post Script I was treated to a listen of some bootleg recordings from the next night and can now say with surety that the relaxed pace of March 1st was simply that, the artist stretching out in a place of tuneful leisure.
The next night, Mr. Kottke was back to performing many of the same pieces with higher energy and faster tempos. He told longer stories as well. Set Lists from both nights and a photo from March 2nd follow below:. Like this: Like Loading Pingback: One Man's Guitar. Coolidge Rising Song previews provided courtesy of iTunes. Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon have both staked out distinctive and original roles in the annals of American music. Beginning his career on John Fahey's Takoma label in , Kottke virtually invented his own school of playing with his distinct, propulsive fingerstyle. As a co-founder of Phish and solo artist, Gordon has both created both a boundary-pushing discography and helped inspire a generation of improvisers.
Hours Mon-Fri am Stepping out with a new single from the always adventurous and highly accomplished Lori Cullen. Everything has changed too fast.
All of my paid work is gone. I have to teach my child and I am failing. I have no more time to myself. Grocery shopping feels like going to battle. I have to do something to remind me of who I am, to give me hope and to pull myself out of the mud. So I ask my friend Ari Posner to send me a piano track, some music that we can make together online in distance. He sends this Joni piano accompaniment that feels like everything I need to hear right now, everything I need to sing.
I am so inspired by his playing and approach to this song I have heard so many times before. I do one vocal take and I can feel a sense of myself whipping through my body. Chills and heat run through me while I sing this perfect song by Joni that she wrote when she was only I finish the take and I cry so deep that things loosen and I can move again, for now.
This is how I cope, it is how I have always coped.
